January 15, 2002 Tuesday 9:49 am COUNTRY WEDDING + ALUMINUM ESCALATOR + COMIX BOOKSTORE My classmate is having a wedding in the countryside. Looks like Tagaytay. We are criuising thru hills of green. And lotsa turns in the road. And it's kinda muddy. Could be Baguio. Anyway, we are driving around at night, trying to catch up to the car ahead of us. But it seems uselss. Unless we speed like demons. When we get to this large church, it looks like a scene out of Monty Python's Holy Grail. I'm not sure what happens next. I am in a large factory. They are making aluminum foil. There are a lot
of people with me. Apparently, this factory is a daanan for many of us.
Now, in order to get to the street level, we have to take an escalator,
and they have a really unique one there: it's an escalator made of aluminum
foil. It rises in chunks. And you have to keep stepping on them in order
to get up, can't just stay passive. And then, just as suddenly, I am in a large, brightly lit bookstore.
Looks like Powerbooks, or PageOne. There are shelves full of graphic novels.
There are about 4 of us, including Twinkle, who are there, looking at
stuff. I spy that the prioces of the grafic nbovels are way way way cheaper
than anything I have ever before seen, excepting Book Sale
. 70 pesos,.
50 pesos., 150 pesos. I am grabbing them one by one, trying to pick out
a bunch that look really wild. And then a guy comes up from behind and asks me to autograph a scruffy looking xerox sheet. I ask why? And he says, because you're the guy who brought PAINFUL to life and the very first production of Pippin. And I look at him and sorta recognize him as one of the cast or crew of Blue Rep's Pippin, from way way back! So I sign the paper. With a purple pen pa, no wonder. And it's the sign pen type, ball roller. The type I used to have but now have no ink for. The type I sorta miss. And I greet the guy, "Long time no see"! And so much for my celebrity status. January 16, 2002 And then I was a teacher, coming home to the area where I was teaching.
And the place I was staying at was Bulusan. And the kids were asking me
about the next day's field trip: what they should wear. I told some of
them that it was a casual affair: t-shirt and jeans. The kids were kinda
shocked. They'd never been asked to wear casual in their whole student
lives. And then I was in a party. Lotsa people, all eating and talking. And
there is someone, a visitor, asking me if I had any instrumental music
he could have recorded for a soundtrack. I said yeah I had a lot. And
he was specifying music without any beats. Just ambient stuff with no
drums. And I said Yeah. I had originals na ganun. So, next up, I am hunting
for the CDs which contain the music. I am hunting thru overhead cabinets
while the guests are milling about our large house
. And looking
for Sumibol, and Vespers, and all
. And I know that one of my officemates,
I think it is Ferdie, will be in charge of recording the mixtape for this
guy. I don't even know why I'm bending over backwards for this guy. Sigh.
Anyway. So there. January 17, 2002 NEWS ANCHOR + BEACH VACATION + PAPA ON STREET And then suddenly I am a news anchor on E! entertainment television. And we are filming our weekly segment in a shop which looks like AREA or Home Ideas. We are sipping tea of some sort, but my co-anchor corrects me. "It is called Delectable Mist". Okay. Whatever. It still looks like a candle floating in your cup of water. Tho it does indeed taste soothing. Maybe it is an elvish drink? Then I am on the sidewalk in the province where the beach resort is located.
And I see Papa and Naya walking down the road. And papa stops someone
with a box of papers and documents. He searches thru the junk that's about
to be thrown and says "Here it is! Mama threw these papers, and I
had to save some of it." He's found a folder with some papers in
it, and rescued it from the trash.
